The River Wisp is the third chapter in the Library book Gryffi's Fairy Tales. It tells of a Blue Will o' the Wisp which, intentionally or not, leads people to their untimely demise.

Story[]

In the woods there resided a blue Will o' the Wisp who made a habit of luring innocent souls to their demise. The wisp, whose glow was especially dull, enjoyed lurking near human establishments, where it would attract the attention of those who wandered by. The humans who encountered the wisp often thought themselves lucky, usually shocked that such a timid creature would approach them. After finding someone willing to follow it, the blue wisp would take its victim to the river and hover over the rushing rapids. It was then that the wisp's victims made their final mistakes. The river, now commonly referred to as the "River of Lost Souls," both appeared to be shallow in depth and slow-moving in speed. Not being the case, those who followed the wisp realized their mistakes far too late and were pulled under the surface, swept away forever. It was a while before anyone was even aware of this wisp, because none had lived to share the tale. However, after multiple disappearances and reports of people being seen following this supposedly malicious Will o' the Wisp lead people away, word began to spread about the evil spirit. A few humans went in search of the murderous creature to put an end to its deeds. However, no amount of searching the woods resulted in success. Some say that the wisp simply moved to a different area to carry on its murders. Others speculate that the wisp simply disappeared into the river, full of regret for its crimes.
To this day, the dull-glowing wisp has not been found, and none knows the reasoning behind its actions.
